Among the big winners in the 2014-15 state budget signed by Gov. Rick Scott on Monday is the University of South Florida, which picked up funding for a number of projects that still needed support.

According to USF News, all five of the university's top legislative priorities were met.

We learn two things from a recent study by NerdWallet.com:

  1. Tampa is the sixth-best U.S. city for starting a business.
  2. There's a NerdWallet.com.

The price comparison website recently calculated the best cities to start a small business, taking into account loan availability, per capita income, small business-friendliness rating and other factors.

Our own Cigar City ranked at No. 6 on the survey of 42 metro areas. Here's the explanation:

One of the people invited to President Obama's speech at the Port of Tampa is Eileen Rodriguez, director for the Small Business Development Center at the University of South Florida.

She's been working with the SBDC since 1997, providing one-on-one confidential counseling and teachings seminars in English and Spanish on small business start-up, international trade, and women and minority certification.
