DIY Assault Reports Create Questions And Closure

Aug 15, 2017

Facebook statuses are now being used as a way to report sexual assault, without involving authorities whom many distrust.  This cynicism follows national cases of sexual assault which share a common ending—the victim is doubted, and the assailant not only walks free, but is typically shown sympathy. WFSU spoke with one young woman who shared the details of her attack through a Facebook call-out post.

One in five women report having experienced rape, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Florida State University doctoral candidate Wayne Rivera says that means many people know a sexual assault survivor, whether they realize it not.

"The way I'm defining it at least, which includes friends and partners. Most people tend to know a victim. Maybe they disclose to them or not. But most people will tend to know a victim or survivor," Rivera said.

Attorneys for top NFL draft pick Jameis Winston contend a woman seeking civil damages from the quarterback after accusing him of rape is trying to tarnish his reputation and tap into the Heisman Trophy winner's newfound wealth.

The former Florida State star practiced again Saturday, the final day of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' rookie minicamp, and was not made available to comment on a counterclaim filed on his behalf one week after signing a four-year, $23.35 million contract.

Two bills aimed at protecting victims of sex-related crimes are now headed to Governor Rick Scott.

A bill allowing victims of sexual and physical abuse to secretly record their attackers to use as evidence in court passed the Florida House.

The attorney for a woman who accused star Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston of sexual assault said Thursday that she intends to sue the school, the Tallahassee Police Department and the player himself.

Patricia Carroll said she plans to file a notice to sue the police department early next week. Under Florida law, anyone filing a lawsuit against a government agency must file court paperwork six months prior to the suit itself.

FSU, the Tallahassee Police Department and an attorney for Winston couldn't immediately be reached for comment Thursday.

On Saturday night, there's a very good chance Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston will win the Heisman Trophy, awarded each year to the best college football player in the country.

For Winston, family, friends, teammates and Seminole fans, undoubtedly it'll be a shining moment, but a discordant note continues to run through this tale of football glory.

The attorney for the woman who has accused Florida State University quarterback and Heisman Trophy finalist Jameis Winston of sexual assault is asking Florida's Attorney General to investigate the case. Patricia Carroll says Tallahassee police have yet to fully investigate the charges.

Holding up 248 pages of investigator documents, Carroll says most of the documents refer to her client's phone, text messages and social media account. Just eleven pages focus on the man she accused of sexual assault.
