Tobacco Companies Appeal $35M Sick Smoker Case

Two cigarette makers are asking the Florida Supreme Court to take up a case in which an appeals court said a longtime smoker and his wife should receive $35 million because of “intentional” wrongdoing in the past by the tobacco industry.

Almost seven years after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, Florida lawmakers are finalizing a settlement plan. There’s still some distance between the house and senate versions, but top lawmakers say a compromise is on the way.

The U.S. Department of Justice has settled a lawsuit with the nation’s largest private nursing home company.


Florida Part Of Settlement With Major Life Insurers

Florida is part of a multi-state settlement totaling $3.4 million with four major insurance companies over the issue of improving the way life insurance beneficiaries are notified after policyholders die, state officials announced Thursday.

Federal Judge Approves Medicaid Settlement

A federal judge has given final approval to a settlement in a decade-long legal fight over care provided to children in Florida's Medicaid program. 

The Justice Department said Friday that it had reached settlements totaling more than $250 million with hundreds of hospitals where doctors implanted cardiac devices in violation of Medicare coverage requirements.

Florida Gets Biggest Chunk of Chase Settlement

The bank giant JP Morgan Chase is changing its credit card debt collection practices after a lawsuit involving Florida's and 46 other state attorney generals.  Florida is getting the largest chunk of the $136 million settlement. 

Florida Chase customers who were affected by the company's debt collection practices are receiving $4.6 million  in restitution. Chase has been accused of illegal tactics like robo-signing - signing lots of documents without actually reviewing records.
