Pension Numbers Increase Budget Pressure

Oct 6, 2017

State analysts agreed Thursday to lower the expected rate of return on Florida's $154 billion pension fund, which will put more pressure on lawmakers as they craft a new state budget.

Florida lawmakers are approving a measure giving state workers a raise in exchange for revamping benefit plans.  The proposal passed alongside the state budget on the final day of Florida’s legislative session.

A controversial pension reform bill that just passed the House is now in the Florida Senate’s hands.

Over 150 new laws went into effect in Florida today. One of them was the option to covert faster golf carts - or similar low-speed vehicles - to even lower-speed carts, saving golf cart owners registration and insurance fees.

A regular golf cart only goes up to 20 mph. Low-speed vehicles can zoom by at more than 20 mph but not more than 25 mph. Unlike golf carts, low-speed vehicles have to be registered and insured.

The new law permits low-speed vehicles to be converted into regular golf cart status for a one time fee of $40 dollars.
