A Florida sheriff's deputy died Monday afternoon, a day after being shot in the head while responding to a dispute over a cat, authorities said.

Authorities have arrested the niece of a fugitive wanted in two killings, including the shooting of an Orlando police officer.

 

Online court records show that 27-year-old Lakensha Smith-Loyd was arrested Wednesday on a charge of accessory, a day after the fugitive’s supervisor at a fried chicken restaurant was arrested on a similar charge.

A suspect who is the focus of a manhunt following the fatal shooting of an Orlando police officer has a lengthy criminal record dating back two decades.

Cortnee Brantley is supposed to begin serving a sentence Monday for her role in a 2010 shooting that killed two Tampa Police officers. But before that could happen, Brantley was arrested by Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputies Saturday for getting in a fight on the way home from a 'going away' party.

St. Petersburg police are still trying to sort out how a local teen got a loaded handgun and ended up shooting a police officer and rattling the department.

St. Petersburg Police Office Michael Cordiviola is recovering at Bayfront Medical Center after being shot in the leg on Sunday. Two other officers at the scene, Matthew Enhoffer and Brian Lynch,  were not injured.

St. Petersburg Police Chief  Holloway said  the wounded officer’s training kicked in and he used a nearby garden hose as a tourniquet until medical help could arrive.

Florida sheriffs gathered in Tallahassee Monday to honor those who lost their lives last year in the line of duty.  The Florida Sheriff’s association memorialized three deputies including Leon County’s Chris Smith.

Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor released this statement in response to the Florida Supreme Court reducing the death sentence for Humberto Delgado Jr. to life without parole for killing police Cpl. Mike Roberts in 2009:

"We respect the justice system and those who have to make tough decisions. 

Regardless of the conclusion, it doesn't bring Mike back and it doesn't relieve the pain that his wife, son and his TPD family feel. His life sentence will still ensure he is held accountable for his actions."

Jacksonville police are asking for help catching the men who they say stole a gun that was used to kill a police officer.

The Sheriff’s Office has released a video and photos of two men trying to open the door of a car in the Bartram Springs area last summer. The two are wanted in connection with burglaries of several cars parked on Wind Cave Avenue in the early morning hours of August 5.

A man known to local law enforcement for having anti-government views shot and killed Leon County Sheriff’s Deputy Christopher L. Smith this past weekend. In an emotional press conference Sunday, the Sheriff’s Office, Tallahassee Police Department and Fire Officials outlined the events that led to the first death of a sheriff’s deputy in the county in a century.

A Leon County Sheriff’s Deputy is dead and another wounded after they were ambushed by a man who started shooting at them as they responded to a house fire.

The confrontation occured in the Plantation Woods subdivision.

In a written statement, the Leon Sheriff’s office says, “the suspect took the fallen deputy’s firearm and began walking North on Caracus Court actively shooting at the first responders as they arrived on the scene.

More Florida police departments are equipping their officers with body cameras. Some cities like Miami Beach even plan to have other types of employees including code enforcement officers wear cameras. And the US Border Patrol will begin testing them on agents next month. In the aftermath of last month’s police shooting in Ferguson, Missouri the devices are garnering support but they’re also raising privacy concerns.

A central Florida sheriff's deputy was fatally shot while responding to a car burglary call near Orlando.

According to the Orange County Sheriff's Office, the 34-year-old deputy saw a suspect sitting in a car with a woman late Monday. The suspect started to run and the deputy pursued him. That's when the man fired at the deputy, hitting him.

The North Carolina attorney general's office is going back to a grand jury in an attempt to indict a Charlotte police officer accused of shooting an unarmed former Florida A&M University football player last year.

Attorney General Roy Cooper said Wednesday that prosecutors will resubmit the case against officer Randall Kerrick on Monday.

An unarmed man who was shot and killed by a police officer in North Carolina after a wreck was a former football player for Florida A&M University, school officials said Sunday.

Dontae Morris, who is suspected of killing Tampa police officers Jeffrey Kocab and David Curtis during a 2010 traffic stop, will go to trial in November. The high-profile case will likely be tried in Orlando, with jurors from Orange County. If convicted, Morris could face the death penalty. Morris, 27, is already serving a life sentence for the 2010 shooting death of Rodney Jones outside a Tampa club.
