Members of the Pasco County Planning Commission on Monday approved a $75 million solar farm to be built on land previously zoned for agricultural use near Dade City.

The solar plant, which will add around 50 megawatts to the power grid by the end of the year, is part of an $850 million plan by Tampa Electric to create 10 solar plants by 2021.

Voters in a number of cities throughout Polk County will go to the polls Tuesday for a variety of municipal elections.

Floridians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty

Faith leaders from across Pinellas and Pasco counties are urging State Attorney Bernie McCabe to stop seeking the death penalty in murder cases.

Among the 46 pastors and priests who signed a letter to McCabe were Bishop Gregory Parkes from the Roman Catholic Diocese of St. Petersburg and Reverend Russell Meyer, the director of the Florida Council of Churches.

The National Hurricane Center says Hurricane Irma has strengthened back into a Category 5 storm, as officials warned more than 5 million people that time was running out Friday and ordered them to evacuate ahead of the deadly hurricane as it followed a path that could take it from one end of the state to the other.

Forecasters also extended hurricane and storm surge warnings and watches farther north to the Anclote River, including Tampa Bay.

Officials in Florida said Saturday a sinkhole that swallowed two homes last month is growing.

Pasco County officials during a news conference that a large chunk of the hole's edge has collapsed. Two more homes in Land O'Lakes, a Tampa suburb, have been condemned.

The sinkhole, which opened up July 14, is now about 260 feet (79 meters) wide at its widest point.

Emergency management officials will collect water samples to test for E.coli on Monday in the immediate neighborhood where a sinkhole swallowed two homes in Florida.

A sinkhole that started out the size of a small swimming pool and continued to grow in Pasco County swallowed a boat, destroyed two homes and prompted officials to evacuate residents from 10 other homes on Friday.

Funding for a first-of-its-kind facility did not survive the Governor’s veto pen. That’s despite being named for an abused victim of the now-closed Dozier School for Boys.

Among the $410 million worth of projects struck from the new state budget by Governor Rick Scott's veto pen are a number of items with ties to the Tampa Bay area.

Pasco and Citrus counties are opening shelters because of Friday night's expected cold weather.

Temperatures north of the Tampa Bay area are expected to drop Friday night into the low to mid 30s.

Some neighborhoods near the Anclote River in Pasco County are flooding.

Because of high tide, Hurricane Hermine and a strong thunderstorm on Saturday, the Anclote River crested Sunday at 25.08 feet, officials said, and is forecast to slowly recede out of major flood stage by 8 a.m. Monday. The Anclote area remains under a flood warning.

The first organization authorized to dispense medical marijuana in Florida has made its first home delivery.
