Governor Rick Scott wants to find better ways for the public to evacuate, in case of an emergency. He’s ordering an evaluation of the state’s roadways.

More than $45 million in revenue is believed to have been lost when the state suspended highway toll collections to help speed evacuations and relief efforts for Hurricane Irma, Florida's Turnpike system estimates.

A bill that would eliminate building toll lanes on existing free interstate highways has moved through the transportation committee of the Florida Senate.

On Thursday, the Florida Department of Transportation will present a plan to Tampa City Council that would add express toll lanes to Interstate 4, Interstate 75 and Interstate 275.

It's called the Tampa Bay Express.

Tampa city council members learned Thursday they can not sue the state for its planned widening of Interstate 275. 

 

Council members wanted to know if they could sue to stop the Florida Department of Transportation from adding an express lane through Tampa Heights.

 Tampa City attorney Sal Territo said only people can sue, not another governmental body.

The Florida Department of Transportation is the latest state agency to lose its leader, after Governor Rick Scott secured his re-election.

Ananth Prasad has overseen one of Florida’s largest agencies, the Department of Transportation. He’s served as that agency's secretary since Scott was first elected in 2011 and becomes the fourth agency chief to step down since Scott was re-elected. His departure follows turnover at the Florida Department of Children and Families, Corrections, and Environmental Protection.

Three years ago a blistering assessment by a national advocacy group prompted the Florida Department of Transportation to get serious about making the state’s roadways safer for pedestrians and cyclists. After four Florida metropolitan areas were ranked as the most dangerous for pedestrians, FDOT leaders began to consider making design changes such as building narrower lanes.

Proponents of narrower lanes argue that wide, open lanes encourage motorists to hit the gas and endanger pedestrians, while narrow lanes force motorists to slow down.

The Tampa Bay area has three options when it comes to the future of its cruise ship industry - and two of them would cost a lot of money.

That's the conclusion reached in a Florida Department of Transportation study released Tuesday.
