Saying that "winning everything" is what drives him, new University of South Florida Athletic Director Mark Harlan is promising to hit the ground running.

The 44-year-old, who currently serves as UCLA's Senior Associate Athletic Director, was named USF's A.D. Tuesday.

He takes over a program in which the "marquee sports" - football and men's basketball - have struggled over the last few years. The Bulls football team went 2-10 last season and hasn't been to a bowl game in three seasons, while the men's basketball team enters this week's American Athletic Conference (AAC) tournament as the 10th seed out of 10 teams.

Nevertheless, Harlan called the job "one of the greatest opportunities in college athletics." Speaking to reporters Tuesday, he promised to strive to turn those fortunes around.

For the second time this week, a major figure at the University of South Florida announced his intent to retire in 2015.

Athletic Director Doug Woolard said on Thursday that he'll retire when his contract ends in June of next year. USF Sarasota-Manatee Regional Chancellor Arthur Guilford announced on Tuesday that he'll step down in January 2015.

But while the official statement from USF was filled with glowing words for Woolard, ESPN's Brett McMurphy cited unnamed sources in saying Woolard was actually being replaced because of "wide-ranging dissatisfaction" with the USF football and men's basketball programs.

However, others disagreed, saying Woolard wasn't forced out.

USF Board Boss Blasts Holtz, Then Preaches Patience

John Ramil, President of USF Board of Trustees, addresses reporters with USF President Judy Genshaft, in March 2012
WUSF 89.7 News

We may have a better idea what prompted University of South Florida Athletic Director Doug Woolard to speak out earlier this week with his tentative support for embattled football coach Skip Holtz.

Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times reports Board of Trustees chair John Ramil sent an email to USF President Judy Genshaft's chief of staff immediately after this past Saturday's 37-26 loss to Temple--an email that simply read "Disgusting and unacceptable. We have major problems with our football program."

That note was forwarded to Woolard, with an attachment: "Hope things are better. Make sure you have conversation with the Board Chair. Thanks."

USF football coach Skip Holtz

Contrary to some University of South Florida football fans' wishes, Coach Skip Holtz will keep his job, despite USF losing four games in a row and 10 of its last 11 Big East games.

Athletic Director Doug Woolard issued a statement Tuesday supporting the embattled coach, saying: "As has been our practice in the past, we will evaluate the status of each of our 19 programs at the conclusion of their respective seasons. We'll identify where we are as a football program at that time and continue to build from there."
