Spirit Airlines Taps A Nation Of Hate Fliers

Feb 19, 2014

Spirit Airlines is one of the fastest-growing airlines in America. Last week, we flew Spirit from New York to Fort Lauderdale for $68.99 each. Cheap!

But that doesn't count fees. We paid $30 extra to pick our seats ahead of time. Once you're on the plane, a bottle of water costs $3. Even putting a bag in the overhead bin costs money on Spirit.

Somewhere between New York and Florida, the guy sitting across the aisle from us leaned over and said, "This sucks."

A U.S. judge says American Airlines can exit bankruptcy and join forces with US Airways Group, all but ensuring that their merger can take place within weeks. Wednesday's bankruptcy court ruling was one of the final hurdles for a huge merger that's been in the works for more than a year.

The ruling by Judge Sean Lane comes months after he gave his preliminary approval to the plan. The two companies are now planning to finalize their merger on Dec. 9, when they would combine to create the world's largest airline.

A 39-year-old man has been accused of making and possessing a "hoax bomb" and making a false report about an explosive device following the scare that shut down Jacksonville (Fla.) International Airport for five hours on Tuesday.

Our colleagues from WJCT report that the man, Zeljko Causevic, "is a Jacksonville resident originally from Serbia."

Monday was the first full day of cost-saving furloughs for nearly 15,000 Federal Aviation Administration employees. While weather seemed to be a factor in many flight delays, Florida Governor Rick Scott isn't taking any chances.

This week, Scott published an open letter to President Barack Obama decrying the federal budget cuts that have led to fewer air traffic control workers on duty.

Here's the text of the letter, which is available on the governor's website:

Hernando County Airport Seeks to Add "Tampa" to Name

Hernando County Airport

When Kim Poppke represents the Hernando County Airport at trade shows, the conversation inevitably takes the same turn.

"Anywhere that I talk to anybody outside of this area, they don't know where Hernando County is," said Poppke, the airport's marketing and property coordinator. "Naturally, the next thing out of my mouth is, 'Well we're 35 minutes north of the Tampa airport.'"

TSA Tries to Relax Rules for Adults 75+

The Transportation Security Administration  is moving away from a "one size fits all approach" for airport screenings-- adults 75 and older are getting a break and being allowed to keep their shoes and light jackets on. They can largely avoid pat downs too at the Orlando International Airport.

It's like the procedure now used for children 12 and younger.

It's all a test program TSA has launched in four airports across the country including Chicago's O'Hare International, Denver International, Orlando International, and Portland International Airport.
