Florida's Economy Reaches $1 Trillion

Florida’s economy has reached the $1 trillion gross domestic product milestone, according to the Florida Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

“Becoming a $1 trillion economy means Florida is continuing to grow and create jobs, keeping unemployment lower than the national average, and creating economic opportunity,” Jerry Parrish, the foundation’s chief economist, said in a press release.

Prescribed burns are a part of precautions taken throughout Florida to prevent massive forest fires by clearing flammable debris from the ground. They are meant to keep people safe, but one such burn was quite the opposite.

In the Panhandle town of Eastpoint, one of these burns grew out of control on June 24 and burnt down 36 homes. 

A 2012 internal investigation found that 48 Florida state employees made mistakes in issuing permits for concealed weapons, security guards and other similar licenses — in some cases not even looking at applications, according to records released this week to The Associated Press.

Two Republican candidates for governor participated in their first debate Thursday in Kissimmee.

Congressman Ron DeSantis and Florida Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam squared off in a nationally televised debate on Fox News.

The candidates were questioned about the Trump administration’s immigration policy and how they would help secure the border.

Florida Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam, the leading Republican candidate for governor, said Tuesday that Americans don't need to fight about Confederate statues and should instead focus on fighting the country's 21st century enemies.

Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam is warning drivers about credit card skimmers at the pump.

 

Skimmers often cover right over the slot where drivers enter their card to pay for gas, skimming information off the card and sometimes even the PIN.  The state has found and removed 276 skimmers so far this year. Florida Retail Association spokesman James Miller said a growing population and the large number of tourists make the state ripe for skimming.

He's not running for governor yet - at least not officially - but Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine is sure sounding like one. He spoke Friday afternoon at the Tampa Tiger Bay Club, where he called himself a "radical centrist."

Levine acknowledges he'd have a tough time in Florida's closed primaries, which usually favor candidates who lean further to the left or right. The multimillionaire Miami Beach businessman says he might just run as an Independent.

Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam says it’s frustrating that lawmakers couldn’t agree on how to implement medical marijuana. It’s up to the state department of health to figure out the rules for medical marijuana use after voters approved a constitutional amendment.

Putnam says he would prefer lawmakers to sort out the rules.
