The University of South Florida wrapped up its third and final town hall last week to discuss consolidating the separate accreditations of its three campuses.

After 18 years in charge of the University of South Florida System, President Judy Genshaft announced her retirement Monday.

“It’s really important to see the university reach all these heights and to move forward,” she said at a news conference on the Tampa campus.

The University of South Florida is holding a series of town hall meetings to gather opinions about how to best consolidate the separate accreditations of its three campuses under one umbrella.

Martin Tadlock, the interim Regional Chancellor for the University of South Florida St. Petersburg, is removing the "interim" part of that title.

During her introductory speech in 2000, University of South Florida System President Judy Genshaft set a goal: get USF on the same level as the state's two flagship schools, the University of Florida and Florida State University.

When she finished high school, Radhika Dang wanted to go to the University of South Florida, but got turned down from the Tampa campus.

The American-born Indian student, who grew up in Queens, was denied because her grades were too low. But she could go to USF St. Petersburg.

USF Sarasota-Manatee

In the next 30 years, figures show the fastest growing demographic in the Sarasota-Manatee region will be people 80 or older. In addition, just 31 percent of the nurses currently there have baccalaureate degrees.

The University of South Florida Health College of Nursing hopes to remedy both of those issues by offering its program at its Sarasota-Manatee campus.

A bill under consideration by the Florida House would shake the very foundation of the University of South Florida by revoking the separate accreditations of its St. Petersburg and Sarasota-Manatee campuses.

Members of the State University System's Board of Governors said Thursday they were disappointed that Florida's newest university will miss the original deadline for getting accredited, a designation that can affect students' job prospects and ability to receive financial aid.
