2018 Gubernatorial Race

Dissenters Protest DeSantis Over ACA Stance

Oct 1, 2018

Parents of children with pre-existing conditions protested outside a gubernatorial candidate’s campaign stop in Central Florida this weekend. Sophia Cauley was among them.

She held a sign that read “DeSantis Care is a Disaster” outside the Republican gubernatorial candidate Ron DeSantis’ rally at Iglesia Nacion de Fe in Kissimmee on Saturday.

The day had special significance for her because: “I have a daughter Fiona Carter who five years ago today passed away from sickle cell anemia due to not being able to get healthcare,” Cauley said.

With six weeks left before the gubernatorial election, Florida’s major candidates and their parties have been accusing each other of anti-Semitism.

Gubernatorial candidates Ron DeSantis and Andrew Gillum continue to be the biggest recipients of the state’s matching funds program,

Andrew Gillum called for "common sense gun reform" and deflected questions about fundraising with Broward County's embattled sheriff at a campaign stop on Friday in Plantation.

The Democratic nominee for governor received an endorsement from the gun control group Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America after fundraising with Broward commissioners and county sheriff Scott Israel earlier in the morning.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Ron DeSantis has released a detailed education platform. The former congressman says he wants 80 percent of K-12 dollars spent in the classroom.

Gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum's running mate came to Tampa Tuesday to unveil the Democrats' $1 billion "Fair Share for Florida's Future" plan to revamp the state's public schools.

Until last week, there was plenty of speculation about who the two major party nominees for Florida governor would choose as their running mates.

Eventually, Republican Congressman Ron DeSantis named Miami State Rep. Jeanette Nuñez, while Democrat Andrew Gillum tapped one of his primary opponents, Orlando businessman Chris King.

Florida voters have clear choices among the major party candidates for governor.

Conservative Republican Ron DeSantis and progressive Democrat Andrew Gillum couldn’t be more different in their ideologies, and that could leave a large swath of voters scratching their heads in November.

The 2018 Florida primary was one of the most surprising elections in modern memory. Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum surged from behind to become the Democratic nominee for governor and Donald Trump-backed Ron DeSantis took home a decisive win over Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam.

Gwen Graham is embarrassed.

Diet Coke in one hand, the Democratic candidate for governor scoops up the dental floss in the backseat of her campaign SUV. She also sheepishly notes the tear in the upholstery of the Chevy Equinox, caused she said by the heel of one of her black pumps while she was trying to take a power nap between campaign appearances.

Jane Fonda. Alec Baldwin. Tom Steyer. George Soros. Norman Lear.

The star-studded endorsements Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum has snagged in his quest to become Florida’s first black governor go on and on, capped by progressive patriarch U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

A recent Florida Atlantic University poll has Congressman Ron DeSantis and Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam in a virtual tie in the race to be the Republican candidate for Florida's governor, but 22 percent of Republican voters remain undecided.

Former Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine greeted Leon County voters casting early ballots Wednesday. The gubernatorial candidate says he’s knocking on doors around Florida during the home stretch to the primary election.

Gubernatorial candidates are making their final pitches to voters ahead of Tuesday’s primary. Democrat Gwen Graham returned to Tallahassee Thursday to vote and rally her supporters amid polls showing Graham and Phil Levine tied as front-runners to win the Democratic Gubernatorial primary.

As the 2018 Primary Election approaches we're re-airing stories produced by reporters at WGCU, WJCT, WUSF and WLRN looking at where the Democratic and Republican gubernatorial candidates stand on a host of issues.

Of the five major Democrats running for Florida governor, only one reflects the type of candidate that historically has been elected to lead the state: a white, Christian man.

The five democratic candidates for governor are largely in agreement on what to do about Florida’s algae bloom crisis: redirect freshwater releases from lake O south through the Everglades to a reservoir, which is yet to be constructed, address the sources of nutrient pollution flowing into the lake, and eliminate the political influence of Florida’s sugar industry which has been linked to that nutrient pollution.

Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn is throwing his support behind Gwen Graham in her bid to be Florida's next governor.

Democrat Jeff Greene’s campaign bus pulled up to Jacksonville’s Northwestern Middle School a few weeks ahead of the start of school. The Palm Beach billionaire came to the low-income area to give backpacks to kids.

In their second and final debate for the Republican nomination for governor, Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam and U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis clashed Wednesday over President Donald Trump, Florida’s water crisis and campaign contributions.
