USF Concert Benefits Military "Pen Pal" Group

USF is hosting the first ever "Remember Our Heroes" concert and field party this Saturday. The event will benefit Soldiers' Angels, a non-profit group that lets people provide aid and comfort to military members serving overseas, as well as veterans and their families.

"Nashville Star" singer Jared Ashley and fellow country singer Logan Mize will perform starting at 6 p.m. at the USF Martin Luther King Plaza, near the Marshall Student Center. A field day, featuring a foam party, free pizza, a mechanical bull and more, opens the festivities at 4 p.m. Ashley and Mize will also appear at an after-party at the Dallas Bull at 9 p.m.

"Remember Our Heroes" is the creation of USF sophomore Lauren Golino and her roommate, junior Megan Fabry. The pair came up with the idea after becoming pen pals with service members through Soldiers' Angels.

"So many of the kids over there are really 18 and 19 years old," said Golino, who is a pen pal with a 21 year old soldier from Iowa named Adam. "Online, I mean, everyday, they'll be hundreds of people asking to adopt them, just to have someone to talk to."

The event is being held in collaboration with the USF Student Veterans Association and Circle K International. Tickets are $10 for students and $15 for the general public and can be purchased at the event's website or at the USF Martin Luther King Plaza Saturday.
