Andrea Martin is a WUSF/USF Zimmerman School digital news intern for spring 2018. 

Born in Hialeah, Florida, and later raised in Ocala, Florida, Andrea moved to Tampa to attend the University of South Florida. She is now in her senior year, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication, with a concentration in magazine journalism and a minor in Spanish.

Andrea is also the copy editor and a lifestyle writer at the Oracle, the USF student newspaper.

U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan announced an anti-drug plan Monday to address the growing opioid crisis. According to the Manatee County Republican, the bill will be introduced in the U.S. House later this week.

Members of the Pasco County Planning Commission on Monday approved a $75 million solar farm to be built on land previously zoned for agricultural use near Dade City.

The solar plant, which will add around 50 megawatts to the power grid by the end of the year, is part of an $850 million plan by Tampa Electric to create 10 solar plants by 2021.

By most indications the economy has improved a lot over the past five years, but some Florida children aren’t reaping the benefits.

Between 2011 and 2016 the number of children living in poverty in the state decreased by nearly four percent. Still, one in five children live in poverty, and the number of children who are living in high poverty areas went up by nearly a percent, according to the latest Kids Count report from the Annie E. Casey Foundation.

Older adults in Florida who no longer can drive themselves have a new option when it comes to finding ways to get around.

The University of Florida and the Florida Department of Transportation Safe Mobility For Life have created FindaRideFlorida.org, a website where people can search for transportation options in all 67 of Florida’s counties.

USF CVAST

A recording from 1972 has been uncovered in the University of South Florida Libraries Special Collections.

With the help of this recording, the USF Center for Visualization and Applied Spatial Technologies (CVAST) is building a virtual gallery that will bring Pablo Picasso’s vision of a 102-foot tall sculpture to life.

As a child, Payton Barnwell was fascinated by race cars, but her passion for science came to her in high school with the support of her high school physics teacher.

“He really showed us the applications of the science we were learning,” Barnwell said. “So it wasn’t all theory. He would say, ‘We can do it with this, and we can do it with rockets.’”

Now, the Florida Polytechnic University mechanical engineering junior has been selected for one of the most prestigious aviation and space programs in the country, one specifically designed for women.

The city of Sarasota is planning to file a lawsuit against a number of major pharmaceutical companies to recover damages from the opioid crisis. City Commissioners have voted to retain two attorneys to file the lawsuit.

There has been concerns for years over a disproportionate number of cancer cases among former and current students, faculty and staff at a Bradenton high school. That has led the Manatee County School Board and Board of Commissioners to request a study from the Florida Department of Health.

Bayshore High School has been in operation since 1962, but the district’s electronic records of students only go back to 1985 and to 1993 for the staff.

Tampa International Airport was one of the worst offenders last year in terms of the number of firearms confiscated from fliers.

The federal Transportation Security Administration said in 2017, 97 firearms were found at Tampa International Airport, ranking sixth in the nation for firearms found.
